Welcome to Yorkshire

Yorkshire is the largest traditional county of northern England. In 1974, Yorkshire was divided into the non-metropolitan counties of Humberside, Cleveland, North Yorkshire, and partially into the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire is the largest of the new counties, which included the old county town of York. However, the new county town of North Yorkshire is Northallerton.

Before 1974, Yorkshire was divided into three administrative counties- North Riding, East Riding, and West Riding-and the city of York. For most purposes the ridings were separate administrative units for a thousand years, and Yorkshire was an agricultural, fishing, and manufacturing centre.

Yorkshire covers some 6,000 sq. miles (15,000 kmē) with a population of some five million. This part of northern England is a pleasant, rolling landscape dotted with small villages and larger market towns, where numerous cosy cottages are located and agriculture is the way of life here.

History
The Ridings were divided further into wapentakes, in about 1823 and were used as the basis of administrative counties upon the introduction of local government, in 1888 (although many boroughs within the area were made county boroughs in their own right) In 1986, each of West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire was abolished and reorganised into a metropolitan county.

In 1996, Cleveland was abolished, with its four municipal districts now independent of any superior county administration but, for ceremonial purposes only, reverting to the counties of Durham and (North) Yorkshire from which they were originally taken.

Humberside was also abolished in 1996, with the part taken from Lincolnshire becoming North Lincolnshire, the city of Hull (Kingston-upon-Hull) made independent of any county, and the rest of the former county becoming the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Thus, Humberside and Cleveland were broken up into districts, which became independent administrative counties in their own right, including the expanded City of York.

The main cities in Yorkshire now comprise of:
* York Barnsley
* Beverley
* Bradford
* Doncaster
* Halifax
* Harrogate
* Huddersfield
* Hull
* Leeds
* Ripon
* Rotherham
* Scarborough
* Sheffield
* Skipton
* Wakefield
* Whitby
